I recently visited the Winterthur Museum & Country Estate in Winterthur, Delaware. In addition to the 175 room mansion of the DuPont family, the Winterthur estate is also home to a major research library specializing on American culture. They have a very extensive collection of information on furniture-including Colonial, shaker, and Arts & Crafts furniture. It includes the third largest Shaker library in the country, and one of the best research collections on the Arts & Crafts movement in America. The library’s Arts & Crafts collection includes business papers from many companies, original periodicals, and glass-plate negatives. From their museum book store, I added this book to my Arts and Crafts library:

The Gustav Stickley Photo Archives, Douglas Congdon-Martin, Editor, 2002, The Winterthur Museum and Schiffer Publishing, LTD

The Gustav Stickley Photo Archieves is essentially as the title implies. The book includes prints from nearly all of the 680 original glass-plate negatives that are part of the library’s collection. Included are pictures of tables, desks, case pieces, beds, children’s furniture, and lighting. This book is a great resource for me when designing furniture; but would also be a great value to any Arts and Crafts furniture collector.
